AdvertisementWhen the Masters golf tournament starts this Thursday, those watching on TV will be treated to the usual assortment of visuals: lush green grass, immaculate flower beds, and the world's greatest players putting on a show. But at the actual tournament, an even fiercer competition will be raging behind the scenes: the battle for authentic Masters merch. It stretched back 50 feet from the actual entrance, which was followed by a series of winding metal gates reminiscent of a TSA checkpoint. Fast-food giants are rapidly deploying more order kiosks in the US. AdvertisementMajor US fast-food chains plan to aggressively add more digital order kiosks to their restaurants – and bring in bigger checks in the process. They make up "well over" half of its in-restaurant orders at these locations, CFO Katie Fogertey told investors in November. As well as labor savings, kiosk orders "tend to skew to dine-in" and thus use less packaging than other digital orders, she said. In the US, digital orders currently make up just 15% of Burger King's sales.

The company is pulling out self-checkout stands in 300 stores that have the highest levels of shoplifting and merchandise losses. In 9,000 other stores, Dollar General is converting some or all of its self-checkout registers to regular checkout with cashiers. And in another 4,500 or so stores, Dollar General is limiting self-checkout to purchases of five items or less. Vasos said Dollar General made the decision after using artificial intelligence to analyze hundreds of thousands of purchases at self-checkout. Like other retailers, Dollar General bet self-checkout would reduce its labor costs and speed up checkout for customers.

March 12 marks Equal Pay Day this year
  + stars: | 2024-03-12 | by ( Jeanne Sahadi | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +5 min
New York CNN —March 12 marks Equal Pay Day in the United States, a symbolic date representing the number of days women have to work into the current year just to make the same amount of money men made in the prior one. In dollars and cents, for every dollar a man earns, a woman is paid 84 cents, according to the National Committee on Pay Equity and the Equal Pay Today campaign. If part-time workers and those not employed year-round are included, the gender pay gap is worse, at 78 cents on the dollar, said Deborah Vagins, national campaign director of Equal Rights Advocates and director of Equal Pay Today. The gender pay gap is typically widest when comparing the earnings of White men to Black, Hispanic or Native American women. Equal pay for equal work has been the law of the land for more than a half-century, yet women still cannot get fair treatment when it comes to employment and earnings.

New York CNN —For decades, not having a college degree has often been a barrier for workers seeking a higher-level, better-paying job. That means the lack of college degrees can’t be ignored, since Blacks and Hispanics are least likely to have a bachelor’s degree. “[D]espite the limited progress to date, our analysis shows that, for those who embrace it, skills-based hiring … yields tangible, measurable value. Skills-based hiring boosts retention among non-degreed workers hired into roles that formerly asked for degrees,” they said. The tool is aimed at lower-wage workers without college degrees.

How to strengthen the weaker side of your body

And because muscles work in chains, imbalance-related issues can become a chain reaction, affecting other parts of the body. When it comes to unilateral strength training, dumbbells are the perfect equalizing tool, demanding matching effort from both sides. Leverage science for corrective exerciseOne of the significant differences of unilateral training compared with standard bilateral training is its unique effectiveness as a rehabilitation tool. Research has found that when you train one side of the body with unilateral training, the other side is also stimulated, and this indirect stimulation actually strengthens the nonworking side. No need for an exhaustive focus on the weaker side; by practicing unilateral exercises with equal effort, cross-education training supports the creation of balanced strength and stability.

The study comes as some companies remove self-checkout machines and others adjust their self-checkout operations. Regular checkout also makes customers feel that they are receiving the service they are entitled to as customers of that store, the study found. “The saved effort during the checkout process and the customers’ sense of entitlement explain the effect of checkout type on customer loyalty,” the study said. Self-checkout, on the other hand, shifts the work to customers, making them feel less rewarded, the study found. At a handful of stores, Target has restricted self-checkout to customers buying 10 items or fewer.

But at other chains, where the practice is less consistently enforced, there have been accusations of racial bias. One response to this has been the addition of self-checkout lines. According to a video presented by Walmart executives, Sam’s Club will now have customers go through a gate-like portal rather than having an employee stand at the door and check individual receipts — an innovation that Ms. Crozier described as reimagining the future of retail. The portal is equipped with what Walmart said in a news release was “computer vision and digital technology” to verify purchases. The technology is currently at 10 locations, but Ms. Crozier told the audience that the company hoped to make the change at all of its roughly 600 locations by the end of the year.

The highest state minimum wage in 2024 will be Washington state, at $16.28, up from $15.74. The state with the biggest jump in its minimum wage this year will be Hawaii, which is hiking it by $2. The push to raise it has gone on for years because minimum wage workers stuck at $7.25 have lost substantial buying power. But advocates for a higher minimum wage, including Holly Sklar, CEO of Business for a Fair Minimum Wage, would rather see it adjusted for inflation from where it was in 1968. “People replace tires they couldn’t replace or get their kids clothes.”For businesses, she said, consumer spending goes up because minimum wage workers will spend their additional earnings quickly.

Target is testing a new self-checkout policy

New York CNN —Target is testing a new self-checkout policy as retailers are finding the cashier-less technology can put off customers. At a handful of stores, Target has restricted self-checkout to customers buying 10 items or fewer. Target and other retailers had expanded self-checkout machines in recent years. Self-checkout machines sometimes break. Target said that merchandise losses, known as shrink, were not a factor in testing new self-checkout policies.

By eliminating those small interactions between customers and cashiers, self-checkout stations could also be contributing to a broader loneliness epidemic .
